Singer-Songwriter John Anglin review – budding star flies the flag for velvety indie-rock, indie-folk

With joy and candour, the passionate songwriter brings the charms of honest indie to a new generation

The young artist pays his homage to the fuzzy indie rock that inspired him, 90s acts such as Pavement, Sonic Youth and Mazzy Star are obviously the bands for a young man. An American rising star, John has released songs like “Tree of Life”, “The Wheels Keep Rollin’” and “ Things I Don’t Understand”, the Lexington, Kentucky indie artist is making an impact.

“I am very passionate about music. I believe the music one creates should be honest.” He consistently narrows the focus to lure you into his music predicament. Whether it’s a natural evolution or a pointed refusal, his album “Cause & Impact” swaps crunching guitars for a softer, mostly synthetic setting, a sound as expansive as it is intimate.

The audience clearly identifies with the pure-voiced singer’s everyday persona and songs that dreamily address teenage apprehensions, from curious travails to feeling nervous. His sound isn’t exactly raw and some 90s indie veterans will probably emphasize that they’ve heard all this before. Still, for a generation for whom fuzzy, grungy indie rock is a new, joyous experience, John Anglin is a shining, guiding star.
